Medical Tourism in India

Overview

Travel Healthcare is a growing sector in India. Approximately 2 million patients visit India each year from 78 countries for medical, wellness and IVF treatments. India receives a significant number of medical patients from Australia, Canada, China, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

To encourage applications and ease the travel process for medical tourists, the Government expanded its e-tourism visa regime in February 2019. The maximum duration of stay under this visa is 6 months. Since August 2019, foreigners can receive most medical treatments in India except organ transplants without a medical visa.

In August 2023 the Ministry of Home Affairs introduced the Ayush Visa category for foreign nationals to promote healthcare travel to India. Tech-driven companies are also providing online medical tourism support services.

Cost Advantage

Medical treatment in India can cost nearly one-tenth of the price compared to the United States or the United Kingdom. Popular procedures include alternative medicine therapies, bone marrow transplant, cardiac bypass surgery, eye surgery and joint replacement.

Quality of Care

India has more than 839 NABH accredited hospitals offering high standards of healthcare. Patients can recuperate either in the hospital or nearby accommodation and many hospitals also offer telemedicine follow-ups.

Chennai is often called India's “Health Capital” due to its large number of super-specialty hospitals and international patients.
